On October 26, 2012, 3SM was given a very special experience for Art Awareness. The painting we were shown, above, is called Mother's Helper, and it is painted by Diego Rivera. But the extra special part of the lesson is that it was presented by Valeria's mother and grandmother.
First, Mrs. Guerrero showed us the print and explained about the artist who comes from their country, Mexico. The children discussed patterns, light vs. dark, and the subject of the painting. We learned about the flowers that Diego Rivera used, and then each child was given a circular stack of crepe paper already prepared for them to fold.
Each layer is carefully lifted, one at a time, to stand straight up like so:
At the end of the session, Valeria presented me with a whole bouquet which her grandmother had made:
It was wonderful to have Valeria's mom:
and her grandmother:
teach us about this famous Mexican painter!
